Where is Echuca?

4 August 2021
Echuca Wharf Murray River Cruises

Echuca is an easy 2.5 hours drive from Melbourne nestled on the mighty Upper Murray River. The Port of Echuca became the largest inland port in Australia. The entire Port Area was declared an historic precinct in 1975. There is such a variety of ways to indulge all your senses from great eateries, live music festivals or ample golf opportunities, all set against a natural backdrop of moving rivers, ancient river gums and wonderful Mediterranean style climate.

From the earliest days of Echuca’s history, growth and development of the area has been intimately linked with the Murray River System.

The Murray River stretches for over 2,600 kilometers, from the Great Dividing Range in the north east of Victoria to its mouth at Goolwa in South Australia. The Murray River is one of the world’s longest navigable rivers and a major source of water for much of south-eastern Australia.

Originally the home of the indigenous Yorta Yorta people, the name means ‘meeting of the waters.’ Echuca is the spot where the Goulburn and the Campaspe rivers join the Murray. It was named the Murray River by Sturt after it was discovered in 1830, settlements along the Upper Murray River include Swan Hill, Koondrook and Moama.
